Sensing, Objects, and Awareness: Reply to Commentators

چکیده

I am very grateful to my commentators for their interest and their careful attention to A Theory of Sentience. It is particularly gratifying to find other philosophers attracted to the murky domain of preattentive sensory processing, an obscure place where exciting stuff happens. I can by no means answer all of their objections or counterarguments, and some of the problems noted derive from failures in my original exposition. But a theory is a success if it helps spur the creation of better successors. By those lights this one seems to be succeeding admirably. Would that every author could receive such commentaries! Two themes resound through the commentaries, and I will focus most of my efforts on them. The first is the relation between sensory feature-placing and the perception of objects; the second the relation between feature-placing and our conscious perceptual experience. Cohen and Matthen lodge numerous objections under the first heading; Rey and Levine post most of theirs under the second one. Of course each author also adds objections unique to themselves, and I shall address as many as can be fit into the space-time region allotted to this reply.

Understanding how pictures are seen is important for comparative visual cognition

My motivation for co-authoring the target article (Weisman & Spetch, 2010) was two-fold. First, l hoped it would restimulate discussion and consideration of the questions, issues and limitations surrounding the use of pictures as surrogates for real world objects in comparative cognition research (Bovet & Vauclair, 2000; Fagot, 2000). Second, I hoped it would encourage more research aimed at as...

3D Modelling of Under Ground Burried Objects Based on Ground Penetration Radar

There is a growing demand for mapping and 3D modelling of buried objects such as pipelines, agricultural hetitage, landmines and other buried objects. Usually, large scale and high resolution maps from these objects are needed. Manually map generation and modeling of these objects are cost and time consuming and is dependent on lots of resources. Therefore, automating the subsurface mapping and...

Kohonen Self Organizing for Automatic Identification of Cartographic Objects

Automatic identification and localization of cartographic objects in aerial and satellite images have gained increasing attention in recent years in digital photogrammetry and remote sensing. Although the automatic extraction of man made objects in essence is still an unresolved issue, the man made objects can be extracted from aerial photos and satellite images. Recently, the high-resolution s...

Reply to the commentaries on "An evolutionary framework for cultural change: selectionism versus communal exchange".

The commentators have brought a wealth of new perspectives to the question of how culture evolves. Each of their diverse disciplines--ranging from psychology to biology to anthropology to economics to engineering--has a valuable contribution to make to our understanding of this complex, multifaceted topic. Though the vast majority of their comments were supportive of my approach, it is natural ...
